Understanding the American Electoral Process, 
Presented by Andrew Hardisty, President of Democrats Abroad, Russia.
 
McCain v Obama--possibly the most publicized presidential contest in
history--has been big news for ages now.  And it should be.  The US, the
largest economy in the world, is in the midst of economic crisis.  The next
US president, apart from being simply the most powerful man in the world,
will decide what to do about the situation and will also determine the
future of relations between the US and Russia. 
 
But what is the contest all about?  Why does it take so long?  What's the
difference between a primary and general election? Why are there only two
major parties?  What's is a red states and a blue state?  What's a GOP?
What's the significance of donkeys and elephants?  Is there really a
difference between Democrats and Republicans?  Oh, and who the heck is the
gal in the hip glasses who can see Russia from her state?
 
We professors at Pericles have been hearing these questions from students
for quite some time now.  So to assuage the curiosity and help everyone
understand what's going on, Pericles is proud to welcome Andrew Hardisty,
president of Democrats Abroad, Russia, to tell you about the process and
